MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Storm Amang (international name Mekkhala) maintained its strength Sunday morning, January 18, as it moves toward Sorsogon, state weather bureau PAGASA said.
As of 4 am Sunday, Amang was located at 45 km northwest of Catarman, Northern Samar, with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h near the center, and gustiness of up to 100 km/h
It is moving northwest at 15 km/h, with heavy to intense rainfall (7.5 to 20 mm) estimated within its 350 km diameter.
Amang made landfall in Dolores, Eastern Samar, on Saturday, January 17. The US Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Japan Meteorological Agency, and Weather Philippines have since downgraded Amang to a tropical storm.
Signal number 2 is up over the following areas:
- Catanduanes
- Albay
- Camarines Sur
- Camarines Norte
- Quezon including Polillo Island
- Sorsogon
- Masbate
- Aurora
- Marinduque
- Burias Island including Ticao Island
- Northern Samar
- Northern part of Eastern Samar
- Northern part of Samar
Meanwhile, the following areas are under signal number 1:
- Metro Manila
- Cavite
- Laguna
- Rizal
- Batangas
- Bulacan
- Nueva Ecija
- Nueva Viscaya
- Ifugao
- Quirino
- Isabela
- Oriental Mindoro
- Romblon
- Rest of Samar
- Rest of Eastern Samar
- Biliran
In areas with storm signals, PAGASA warned residents in low lying and mountainous areas against possible flashfloods and landslides. Ocean waves may also reach up to 6.5 meters within the 350 km diameter of the storm.
Amang is expected to be at 100 km northeast of Infanta, Quezon, by Monday morning, January 19; at 120 km east southeast of Aparri, Cagayan by Tuesday morning, January 20, and; at 245 km east northeast of Basco, Batanes by Wednesday morning, January 21.
“Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the seaboards of Luzon, Visayas and the eastern seaboard of Mindanao,” PAGASA said.
