Severe Tropical Storm Paeng (Nalgae), the Philippines’ 16th tropical cyclone for 2022, unleashed torrential rain that triggered floods and landslides in parts of Mindanao, the Visayas, and Luzon. It struck just as the country was heading into a long weekend to mark All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.
Paeng’s five landfalls were all in Luzon, but initial reports show Mindanao suffered the most deaths, particularly the newly created province of Maguindanao del Norte.

Tulfo relieves 2 DSWD Calabarzon officials over Cavite aid distribution
Social Welfare Secretary Erwin Tulfo relieved his department’s Calabarzon regional director, Barry Chua, and his assistant regional director for operations (ARDO) to ensure an impartial investigation into complaints that their office made it difficult for affected families in Noveleta, Cavite, to get aid after Severe Tropical Storm Paeng (Nalgae).
In a press briefing in Quezon City on Thursday afternoon, November 3, Tulfo said Chua and the ARDO, whom he didn’t name, had been told to report for work at the Department of Social Welfare and Development central office while the investigation is ongoing. Tulfo said he would compare notes with Noveleta Mayor Dino Chua (not related to the RD), who is doing his own probe.

House receives P26 million in-kind donations for Paeng victims
The value of in-kind donations received by the House of Representatives for its relief drive to help victims of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng has reached P26.3 million, the office of Speaker Martin Romualdez said on Wednesday, November 2.
Combined with the P49.2 million in cash pledges accumulated by the lower chamber, donations received by the House of Representatives have exceeded P75 million.
The Batasang Pambansa Complex serves as a repacking station for the relief goods, boxes of which have been delivered to provinces of Cagayan, Camarines Norte, Leyte, Cavite, and Maguindanao.
“We need all the help that we can get, we have already reached many affected families nationwide and we vow to bring the remaining aid to the affected families as soon as possible,” Romualdez said.
