MANILA, Philippines (Update 2) – At least 3 were reported dead due to Tropical Storm Mario (Fung-Wong), according to separate reports from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and the Philippine Red Cross.
Two-year-old girl Althea Gaviola drowned while her family was evacuating their residence in flooded Barangay Bagong Silangan in Quezon City on Friday, September 19. It is the first verified report of a casualty received by the NDRRMC.
Erlinda Centeno, 69, of Rizal province died of a head injury. NDRRMC executive director Alexander Pama also reported 3 injured and one mission.
The Philippine Red Cross chairman Richard Gordon also reported the death of a unnamed 23-year-old man in Barangay 176, Phase 10 in Caloocan City.
Latest reports gathered by the disaster management council show 114,250 families or 513,361 persons in Regions 3, 4-A, 4-B, 7, and the National Capital Region (NCR) were affected by Mario, which placed most of Luzon and parts of the Visayas under Red Rainfall Warning Friday morning.
Rains were concentrated in the National Capital Region and Southern Luzon. In Metro Manila, the hardest hit are the low-lying areas along Marikina River and the Tatalon and Marikina Valley areas. The warning was lowered from red to orange Friday afternoon.
There was a reported landslide in Antipolo City in Rizal province, but Pama said there were no casualties.
Online, Tropical Storm Mario has been compared by netizens to Tropical Storm Ondoy in 2009. NDRRMC said reports show that Ondoy had flooding in wider areas. – Rappler.com
