MANILA, Philippines – Hundreds turned out for the funeral procession for teenager Kian delos Santos that doubled as a protest rally against his death in an anti-drug operation.
Neighbors, schoolmates, and supporters joined the Delos Santos family in the 5-hour procession that started with a mass held at the Sta Quiteria Parish officiated by Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David.
Militant groups known to be allied to the Duterte administration also joined the funeral march, holding banners and placards as they called for an end to the killings. They marched alongside Akbayan, a group associated with former president Benigno Aquino III.
"President Duterte's war on drugs is a war on the poor. The fight against impunity is a shared struggle of all freedom-loving Filipinos. The murder of Kian is an assault on all of us, especially the poor," Bayan said in a statement.
The funeral procession had only hundreds of people but the shouts of "Justice for Kian, Justice for All!" emanating from the march echoed in every nook and cranny that the procession passed.
Delos Santos was killed on August 16, after Caloocan City police conducted "Oplan Galugad" in their community.
The police claimed that Delos Santos was a drug courier, who tried to fight cops so he was shot dead. CCTV footage, neighbors' testimonies, and autopsy and paraffin test results indicate, however, that the teenager, who was not on any drug list, was summarily executed. – Rappler.com
