MANILA, Philippines – Maraming plano ang tila naudlot dahil sa travel bans na inilabas ng gobyerno ng Pilipinas para labanan ang novel coronavirus outbreak.

Sa kasalukuyan, hindi maaaring bumiyahe ang mga Pilipino sa China, Hong Kong, Macau, at ilang parte ng South Korea. Nitong mga nakaraang linggo naman, naglabas ngunit binawi rin ng gobyerno ang travel bans sa buong South Korea at Taiwan.

Ngunit hindi lamang ang mga bakasyon ang naaagrabyado, kundi pati na rin ang libo-libong overseas Filipino workers na naunsyami ang pagbalik sa kanilang bansang pinagtatrabahuan. 

Sa podcast na ito, pag-uusapan nina foreign affairs reporter Sofia Tomacruz at researcher-writer Jodesz Gavilan kung paano nga ba pinagdedesisyunan ang travel bans, ano ang guidelines na kinukunsidera ng gobyerno, at ano ang kanilang plano pagdating sa mga apektadong OFWs. 

Epektibo ba talaga ang travel bans? Ayon kay Tomacruz: 

I think what we’re seeing before and again now is that something that epidemiologists have long observed about travel bans. Borders are imperfect. It’s not fullproof because borders are leaky. No matter what you do, something or someone will always find a way to slip past these bans and restrictions.
These travel restrictions they don’t necessarily stop an outbreak from happening. They only delay it from happening. And at the same time, they have unintended consequences like having… because these restrictions are up, it’s harder for supplies that are needed by health authorities to enter countries where they are needed.
