UFL's Team Socceroo organizes the Santo Papa Futbol club in time for the Papal visit to uplift the spirit of the people of Tacloban through sports

 

MANILA, Philippines – In light of the upcoming papal visit in the country, a football festival dubbed the Santo Papa Futbal Cup will be held in the Yolanda-affected area of Tacloban from January 15 to 17.
The festival is part of the relief efforts to uplift the spirit of the people of the typhoon-hit province through sports and to alleviate the stress brought by the recent calamities from the youth in the region.

United Football League (UFL) top-flight club Team Socceroo FC (TSFC) will host the event in partnership with the Remedios Trinidad Romualdez Medical Foundation, Henry V. Moran Foundation and Mission Tacloban.

Eight teams of youngsters from the 13 and under age group from the Visayas region, two from Ormoc and 6 from Tacloban are expected to take part in this commemorative football festival.

The coaches from Team Socceroo will kick off the 3-day affair by coaching and teaching the participants the basics of the sport followed by the tournament proper on the 16th then an exhibition match that will happen on the day of the arrival of Pope Francis in the province.

“Actually it’s a celebration of the papal visit and at the same time it’s a commemoration for the typhoon victims,“ TSFC club director Nicholas Reyes explained in an interview with Rappler.

It is not a secret to the world that Argentinian Jose Mario Bergoglio or Pope Francis is a big football fan and is even an active member of the Argentinean champs San Lorenzo FC.

In addition, Reyes revealed, “the uniform that we [participants] are actually using will be the same uniform as San Lorenzo FC,”

Lastly, he stressed that their group hopes the leader of the Catholic Church finds time to watch the exhibition game on the final day of the football affair and bless the kids during his visit to the region.
