MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III will be part of the 6 million Filipinos expected to flock to Quirino Grandstand on Sunday, January 18, to hear mass to be celebrated by Pope Francis.
Palace Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr made the announcement in a news briefing on Tuesday, January 13.
“It is my understanding that he (Aquino) is among those that will head there (Luneta mass),” Coloma said, responding to questions. (READ: Pope Francis in Luneta: Things you should know)
Asked whether Aquino’s presence would be pose an additional security challenge to authorities, and may draw the focus of security personnel away from the Pope, Coloma only said, “Let us trust the decision of the President.”
Coloma could not say which other VIP officials would be present at the Quirino mass, adding the invites were given by the Church.
Authorities have laid out a security plan to protect the Pope and those attending his events, while Palace officials have given guidelines to those planning to go to the Quirino event.
A day earlier, Aquino, a Catholic like 80% of the Philippine population, admitted he is a fan of the Pope for involving the Church not just in spritual issues but also in world issues that directly affect the people.
“Shall we say I’ve had my disagreements with some members of our own Church and at the same time, I am, like so many other people, inspired by the works and the deeds of the current Pope,” the President told reporters on Monday.
Francis, only the 3rd pontiff to visit the country since 1970, is scheduled to arrive on Thursday, January 15, and will be in the country until Monday, January 19.
He will be feted welcome honors in Malacañang on Friday, before heading to Tacloban on Saturday to be with Typhoon Haiyan victims. Pope Francis will return to Manila on Sunday to lead the public mass that is expected to attract millions. – Rappler.com
