A group of activists are stopped one kilometer away from the papal motorcade

MANILA, Philippines – Orly Putong, just like many Filipinos, wanted to see Pope Francis but police prevented him from approaching the papal motorcade because he was with a group of activists calling for the Aquino administration to uphold human rights and social justice.

On Friday, January 16, Orly went to General Solano st to catch a glimpse of the Pope’s motorcade as he left Malacañang.

Orly admires Pope Francis because the pontiff condemns the “structural causes of poverty” that negatively affects many farmers and laborers.

Nais natin ipaabot sa Santo papa ang ating panawagan para sa hustisyang panlipunan,” Orly said. (We want Pope Francis to know our appeal for social justice.)

However, his group never got close to the motorcade. They were held off along Arlegui St., a kilometer away from the papal motorcade.

According to former congressman Teddy Casino of the Bayan Muna partylist, they were prevented from going near the Pope due to the “negative” placards they were carrying.

“What’s negative about upholding human rights, releasing political prisoners, and appealing for the landless farmers?” Casino asked.

Sana naman hindi ito maging precedent. The purpose of the police is to secure the Pope and not to prevent people from sending their messages,” Casino added. (I hope this won’t be a precedent)

Nonetheless, Orly believes the Pope is on their side. – Rappler.com
