The facts:

The award was given by One Young World, a not-for-profit organization based in the United Kingdom, which holds an annual summit that gathers young leaders around the world.

The organization was founded in 2009, while the annual Politician of the Year award was created in 2018. The award recognizes outstanding politicians who make a positive impact on young people in their communities and countries.

National Intelligence Coordinating Agency Director General Alex Monteagudo had posted a graphic containing the claim. Elago later called out Monteagudo for regularly sharing posts with false and baseless claims, many of them targeting lawmakers of the Makabayan bloc. The graphic contained the text, “Did you know? Ang One Young World Politician of the Year 2020 award ni Sarah Elago ay iginawad ng CPP-commitee (sic) sa London. Award your self (sic) Sarah?” (Did you know? Sarah Elago’s One Young World Politician of the Year 2020 award was given by the CPP-committee in London. Did you award yourself, Sarah?)

It also contained a photo of Elago with a background showing the logos of the CPP and the National Democratic Front.

In July, One Young World announced Elago and 4 other young leaders as the winners of the annual Politician of the Year award. Awardees were selected by a panel of judges from a short list of 15 young politicians based in multiple countries.

The 6 judges included leaders and experts from all around the world, none of whom are based in the Philippines.

There are also no reports of any connections between One Young World and the CPP.

A reverse image search of the photo led to the original graphic of Elago, which showed her title as Politician of the Year 2020. The background was the Philippine flag, and the graphic also contained the One Young World logo.

Meanwhile, the logo at the bottom of the false graphic is similar to the profile photo of Facebook page Lamrag Sinirangan, which has a history of posting false content. Lamrag Sinirangan also posted the same graphic days after Monteagudo’s post.
