FAST FACT: Presidential pardons
MANILA, Philippines – October 25 marked the anniversary of the pardon granted to former president Joseph Ejercito "Erap" Estrada.
Initially facing reclusion perpetua (life imprisonment) for plunder, Estrada was granted pardon by then-president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2007, the same year when he was convicted and detained.
His pardon was met with controversy, with some suspecting that Arroyo was trying to curry favor from the opposition.
