MANILA, Philippines – This year’s Valentine’s Day marks an important milestone for one senator.

On February 14, Juan Ponce Enrile – one of the most decorated and controversial politicians in the country – turns a year older. He was born in 1924.

He was a key player in both the start of Martial Law in 1972, and the end of the Marcos regime which was marked by the 1986 People Power Revolution.

In 2012, Enrile voted guilty during former Chief Justice Renato Corona’s impeachment trial, over which he presided. The following year, he said he was “not guilty” in a pork barrel scam that led to a plunder charge against him and other legislators.

He was charged in 2013 with graft and plunder for misuse of public funds, but was allowed in 2015 by the Supreme Court to post bail. (READ: TIMELINE: Enrile and the pork barrel scam)
