Nagulat ang Pilipinas nitong Lunes, ika-7 ng Setyembre, nang bigla na lamang bigyan ng absolute pardon ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte si United States Marine Joseph Scott Pemberton.

Siya ay hinatulang guilty noong 2015 sa salang pagpatay kay Jennifer Laude, isang transwoman. Sampung taong pagkakulong ang parusa sa kanya. (READ: Remembering ‘Ganda’: The tragedy of Jennifer Laude)

Ngunit dahil sa absolute pardon, makalalaya na siya nang maaga. Sinabi pa ni Duterte na hindi raw trinato nang patas si Pemberton sa Pilipinas.

Sa episode na ito, pag-uusapan nina justice reporter Lian Buan at researcher-writer Jodesz Gavilan kung bakit si Pemberton, isang dayuhan, ay tila nakalamang sa maraming Pilipinong nanataling nasa kulungan.

Ano ang ibig sabihin nito? Ayon kay Buan:

What this incident showed is his disrespect and disregard for his own state lawyers. Kasi na-undermine ang trinabaho ng Office of the Solicitor General and the Department of Justice. Imagine, days before, the DOJ asserted its ground and said no, you can’t release Pemberton because we have to settle this in the court. Tapos biglang [the President will say] ay sorry, you mistreated Pemberton and I’m gonna do what I want… It’s not only that this President has no regard for what this would mean to Filipinos, he also has no regard for what this would mean for his state lawyers who are supposed to be his foot soldiers. [They] were always at the forefront of defending his moves by coming up with legal justifications. Lawyers of the government should think about that.
