Several governments saw the coronavirus pandemic as the perfect opportunity to further consolidate power and continue their crackdown on dissent.

In the Philippines, red-tagging and harassment of human rights defenders continue. At least two activists were mercilessly killed in the month of August alone.

And in the face of a raging pandemic, an unprecedented health crisis, there are groups calling for President Rodrigo Duterte to declare and eventually lead a revolutionary government.

But in other countries, such as Belarus and Thailand, citizens are fighting back and calling for accountability from their leaders in the face of widespread threats to their freedoms.

On Thursday, August 27, the Newsbreak team will discuss the global picture and how the Philippine situation under Duterte relates to the experiences of other countries.

The discussion with multimedia reporters Sofia Tomacruz, Paterno Esmaquel II and writer-researcher Jodesz Gavilan will be moderated by investigative desk head Chay Hofileña.

What’s with the pandemic that leads to the unraveling of problematic leaders? Is the crisis a perfect time to consolidate power?
