[PODCAST] KRIMINAL: Covering Debold Sinas

The appointment of Major General Debold Sinas as police chief came as a surprise to many considering that he committed a blunder the public might never forget: the mañanita issue.

In May 2020, Sinas celebrated his 55th birthday at the Metro Manila police headquarters, Camp Bagong Diwa, with subordinates surprising him with an early morning party.

The celebration amounted to the violation of lockdown rules that banned mass gatherings and required strict compliance to physical distancing rules.

For the public, it was a display of hypocrisy on the police that arrested tens of thousands of lockdown violators over lighter offenses.

But Sinas is more than just the sensational mañanita story.

In this podcast episode of KRIMINAL, Rappler's police reporter, Rambo Talabong, speaks with Rappler bureau chief and reporter Ryan Macasero on what it is like covering the controversial general, as well as other stories that must not be forgotten.

Sinas' career points to an expression of traits that are compatible with President Duterte: hostility to the press, conflict with activists, and passion for the anti-illegal drugs campaign.
