MANILA, Philippines – Two actor-turned-politicians will battle it out for the vice mayoral post of Manila in 2013 but former President Joseph Estrada does not think the competition is tough.

Estrada, who is running for Manila mayor, downplayed the running mate chosen by his rival, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim.

Lim has chosen Manila 6th District Councilor Luciano “Lou” Veloso to be his vice mayoral candidate after incumbent Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno chose to run with Estrada. Lim was Moreno’s mentor in politics but the two had a falling out.

Veloso is a long-time local official and actor. He recently had a cameo appearance on the Hollywood film Bourne Legacy.

Last week, Lim said he chose Veloso for reasons beyond celebrity. He said Veloso has a good track record in Manila.

“He has no enemies and more importantly, he garnered the highest vote for councilors in the 2010 election,” Lim told the Inquirer.

In a chance interview on Monday, September 24, Estrada said he is not threatened by Veloso’s candidacy.

Mas gwapo ang running mate ko at mas magaling, no comparison,” Estrada said. (My running mate is more handsome, a better politician, there is no comparison.)

Estrada also said that contrary to rumors, he has no plans of dropping his bid for Manila mayor.

“Tuloy na tuloy. Walang makakapigil, kahit na si Dirty Harry, ‘di tayo pwede pigilan.” (We will pursue it. No one can stop us, not even Dirty Harry, he can’t stop us.) –
