Waters off Mactan have unsafe levels of fecal bacteria – DENR
The environment department says it found high levels of fecal bacteria in waters off the popular Mactan Island in Cebu

CEBU, Philippines  – Coastal waters off the popular Mactan island were found to have high levels of fecal bacteria.

A report in Sun.Star Cebu said that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) found “coliform bacteria of about 13,000 most probable number (MPN) per 100 milliliters (MPN per 100 ml).”

The report said the safe level of fecal coliform in waters for swimming is about 1,000 MPN per 100 ml.

Lapu Lapu City on Mactan Island is home to dozens of resorts, including several 5-star resorts on the island’s northern end.

Cindylyn Pepito, DENR Environmental Management Bureau (EMB)-Central Visayas ambient monitoring section chief, said that the bacteria levels pose a health hazard to the public.

She warned the public that fish caught in contaminated waters could be unsafe for consumption as well. She blames the rise in bacteria levels on poor waste management in Lapu-Lapu City.
