Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti posts haunting images of Maysak, taken while aboard the International Space Station

MANILA, Philippines – An astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) captured the menacing Typhoon Maysak in images on Wednesday, April 1.

In several posts on Twitter, ISS astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti showed how Maysak looks like from outer space.

“Commands respect even from #space: we just flew over typhoon #Maysak,” Cristoforetti posted.

Cristoforetti also zoomed in her lens to the typhoon’s eye.

Maysak, currently classified by the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center as a super typhoon, has strengthened further overnight Wednesday, April 1, as it moves closer to the eastern edge of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

It has already brought extensive damage to several islands of the Federated States of Micronesia.

The system could enter the PAR by Wednesday, or early Thursday, April 2, the weather bureau earlier said, and will be assigned the codename Chedeng.

Cristoforetti, an Italian astronaut, is part of the ISS Expeditions 42 and 43, and will be at the space station until May 2015. KD Suarez/Rappler.com
