Malacañang prepares for Pope Francis’ arrival
The palace awaits Pope Francis' arrival, ready to welcome him with a complete diplomatic core and a 21-gun salute

MANILA, Philippines – After Pope Francis’ arrival in Manila, Malacanang prepares for the Pope’s visit for his meeting with government officials and diplomatic core.

Natashya Gutierrez reports.

On Day 2 of the papal visit Pope Francis comes to Malacanang Palace not as the head of the Roman Catholic church, but as the head of state of the Vatican. Because of this he will be accorded with the same welcome as other diplomats.

As early as four hours before his arrival people line the streets hoping for a glimpse of the Pope. They join President Benigno Aquino III, Cabinet members, government officials, and the diplomatic corps in welcoming the Pope to the Palace.

When the Pope arrives, a red carpet will be rolled out to welcome him. There will also be a 21-gun salute. He will proceed to the Palace where he will have a one-on-one talk with the President before they deliver a speech inside Rizal Hall.

Past Papal visits have seen the Pope’s comments on public policy in the Philippines. Many are excited to see Pope Francis, who is known for his frankness, if he will say anything on state issues.
