DLSU-Dasma snatches first win with sweep of San Sebastian
Iumi Yongco led the way for DLSU-D with 13 points while Cherry Rose Nunag and guest player Desiree Dadang paced the Lady Patriots with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

MANILA, Philippines — On the fourth try De La Salle University Dasmariñas finally broke into the win column with an emphatic 27-25, 26-24, 25-20 sweep of the struggling San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the Shakey’s V-League 12 Collegiate Conference on Saturday, August 1 at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Iumi Yongco showed the way with 13 points while Cherry Rose Nunag and guest player Desiree Dadang paced the Lady Patriots with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

“We prepared and made up for our shortcomings in our last 3 games,” coach Raymond Ramirez said in Filipino, noting his team struggled with reception and services.

The 3-time National Capital Region Athletic Association champions worked extra hard on 3 deuces throughout the match to turn back the Lady Stags and gain a 1-3 record in Group B.

DLSU-D still has a chance to enter the playoffs depending on how the remaining games play out as a 3-way tie at 1-4 with San Sebastian and Technological Institute of the Philippines is still a possibility. The top 4 teams of each group will advance to the quarterfinals.

“I told them the battle is not yet over,” Ramirez said.

Getting a first win this late in the conference comes as a surprise for the Lady Patriots reinforced with former UAAP standouts Dadang (NU) and setter Gyzelle Sy (FEU).

Ramirez attributed the winless start to being unable to properly integrate the two guest players as they join in only two of the team’s everyday practices.

Ramirez explained this was because he required Sy and Dadang to show up in practice only on Thursdays and Fridays due to La Salle’s location in Cavite, which is about a 4-hour drive from Metro Manila depending on traffic. That on top of Sy and Dadang’s schedules as they are still studying.

“Naiilang pa yung mga bata kay Gyzelle and Desiree (The players are still not used to Gyzelle and Desiree),” Ramirez said.

Jolina Labiano led the likewise 1-3 Lady Stags with 14 points and Nikka Dalisay added 8.

DLSU-D will face off with sister school College of St. Benilde to wrap up the eliminations on Sunday, August 9 while San Sebastian takes on University of Santo Tomas. — Rappler.com
