MANILA, Philippines – After scoring an upset against University Perpetual Help System Dalta last week, Mapua Institute of Technology sustained its winning momentum by beating San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 87-78, on Thursday, September 3 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
Josan Nimes, who had been sidelined due to a hamstring injury and missed out three games for Mapua, made his return and led Atoy Co’s red-and-gold troop with 18 markers and 6 dimes to improve his team’s win-loss standing to 6-5.
“My hamstring was perfectly fine. I’m about 90 percent now,” he said in the post-game interview.
Although the contest was a see-saw battle in the first two periods, the Cardinals totally pulled away in the third quarter, where Mapua drilled 8 unanswered buckets to turn a small 45-43 halftime cushion into a 53-43 edge.
However, San Sebastian’s ace-shooting duo of Jamil Ortuoste and Michael Calisaan tried to spark a fourth-quarter surge by hitting back-to-back baskets to trail by 78-83 with 59 ticks left.
Nimes completely shut the door on San Sebastian’s rally by capping off Mapua’s 4-0 blitz with a fastbreak layup.
With the disappointing setback to Mapua, San Sebastian downgrades to 3-9 as Ortuoste spearheaded the Golden Stags’ attempt to break into the winner’s column by registering 23 points.
