MANILA, Philippines- The rookie-laden University of the Philippines Lady Maroons outmuscled the seasoned Philippine Navy Coastguards to seal their best-of-3 showdown, 25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 25-15, in the Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference Saturday, December 6, at the San Juan Arena.
Katherine Bersola and Sheena Chopitea led the Lady Maroons with 17 points each as Isa Molde pitched in 16 markers to propel UP to a third place finish this season.
“This podium finish is unexpected,” said UP Coach Gerry Yee.
A very supportive UP community flocked to the Arena and witnessed a strong and gritty Lady Maroons side as they dominated the Navy from start to finish.
Although the Philippine Navy won the second set, UP bounced back stronger in the third set and controlled the game until the end as they displayed strong defensive muscle provided by Marian Buitre and Diana Carlos, partnered with the prolific attacking of Bersola.
“I’m very much happy with the girls,” Yee said of his squad’s performance.
He said many of his players – mostly rookies – really stepped up.
But Yee admitted their efforts to strive for greater things do not end here as they continue to train in preparation of the opening of the UAAP volleyball season in February.
On the other hand, Paulina Soriano led the Coastguards with 15 points while Hezzymie Acuna contributed 13 markers. – Rappler.com
