Vendors expect more income at 2016 Palarong Pambansa

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – Small time entrepreneurs are looking forward to getting high profits in the holding of Palarong Pambansa 2016 here.

Native aeta Anita Sibal, 70, from Angeles, Pampanga is eyeing to earn at least P500 from her usual earnings of P100-200 per day from selling native tools such as sumpit, kulasisi, bow and arrow, and bamboo flute in this week-long national sporting event.

“Kahit malayo, dumayo pa kami rito sa Bicol. Galing pa sa bundok mga paninda namin. Wala kaming matuluyan dito. Kahit saan kami nakikitulog. Pero mas maganda na ‘to kaysa mamalimos kami sa Maynila,” said Sibal.

(Even if it’s far, we traveled here to Bicol. Our products come from the mountain. We have no place to stay here. We just sleep anywhere. But this is better than asking for alms in Manila.)

According to her, this is not just a usual business transaction. This is also a showcase of their talents in making native crafts.

“Syempre ipinagmamalaki namin ito kasi ipinamana pa ito sa amin ng aming mga katutubo (Of course we’re proud of this because the craft was passed down to us from the natives),” she added.

Teresita Llaneta, 51, of Daraga, Albay earns P200 a day selling native fans but when the delegates started to arrive, her income rose to P500.

“Natutuwa ako dahil kahit papaano nakakatulong ako sa asawa ko. Magsasaka lang kasi ang asawa ko kaya malaking bagay yung dito ginanap ang Palaro,” she said. (I’m happy because at least I’m able to help my husband. My husband is a farmer so it’s a big help that the Palaro is taking place here.)

For Darwin Reblora, 34, an ice cream vendor like him should not miss this rare opportunity. He hopes to have additional income even for one week only.

“Bihira lang ito mangyari. First time ito sa Albay at hindi ko alam kung kailan mauulit kaya tiyaga-tiyaga lang ako sa pag-iikot-ikot,”said Reblora. (This doesn’t happen often. This is the first time Palaro is in Albay and I don’t know when it will happen again so I’m working hard walking around to sell.)

Meanwhile, Danny Gabriel of Maasin, Leyte has had scanty income for 3 days in his souvenir items store. Adding to his burden is the space rental worth P15,000 for the whole duration of the Palaro. He complained that the payment is too expensive for a small businessman like himself.

“Maraming kakompetensya. Madami rin kasi nagtitinda ng souvenir sa Albay (The competition is fierce. So many sell souvenirs in Albay),” he said. – Rappler.com
