MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s big men thrived and they sank an NLEX Road Warriors sans Asi Taulava, 85-72, for their second win of the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup on Wednesday, July 27, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Import Justin Brownlee appeared much healthier as he played 36 minutes to produce 24 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal and two blocks. He had suffered severe cramps in Ginebra’s previous loss to Alaska over the weekend.

Japeth Aguilar also flourished with 14 markers, 9 in the fourth, to go with 5 boards and 4 rejections. Joe Devance tallied 5 of his 10 points in the fourth, pulled down 4 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists, helping Ginebra break free from NLEX in the final frame.

“We took advantage of Asi’s absence because we were able to play big lineups and they weren’t able to match up,” said head coach Tim Cone. “They had to play small against our bigger lineup.”

The Road Warriors missed the veteran presence of slotman Taulava, who served his one-game suspension for slapping San Miguel Beermen forward David Semerad on Friday, July 22.

“That was something that was fortunate for us that Asi wasn’t playing. But nobody’s feeling sorry for anybody. Nobody’s feeling sorry for us that we’ve lost Greg (Slaughter) or Paul Harris,” Cone said.

“That’s just part of the league. You just play through these kind of things that happen to you. If you play through them well you develop character. If you cry about it and feel bad about it, you’re not going to develop the required character to compete for championships.”

The Gin Kings’ guard combo of veteran LA Tenorio and rookie Scottie Thompson came through with Tenorio posting 10 points and 3 assists. Thompson showcased his rebounding skills with 12 boards on top of his 8 markers and 4 dimes.

Ginebra locked down on NLEX import Henry Walker, who had just 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Sean Anthony was the only other Road Warrior in double figures with 14 points along with 10 rebounds.

NLEX dropped to 1-2. –
