Batang Gilas falls behind early and doesn't recover in its loss to China

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines was blown out once again by China, 85-55, during the classification round of the 2016 FIBA Asia Under 18 Championship on Saturday, July 30, in Tehran, Iran.

The Philippine team, known as Batang Gilas, was outscored by at least 10 points in 3 of the game’s 4 quarters, and fell behind early, 21-10, after the first frame. China stayed in control the rest of the way.

Theo Flores led Batang Gilas with 12 points and 6 boards, while JV Gallego had 6 points, 6 boards, and 3 dimes.

The Philippines lost a close game to South Korea on Friday which halted the team from advancing to the semifinals.

Batang Gilas was also blown out by China, 95-66, during the group phase of the tourney.

On Sunday, the Philippines will take on the loser of Saturday’s game between Chinese Taipei and India in the classification match to determine who finishes the tourney in seventh place. –
