The Philippines finally won its first medal in 20 years when weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz earned silver in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event at the Rio Olympics. Diaz’s medal was the country’s first since 1996, when Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco took silver in the light flyweight competition.

At the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 13 athletes comprised of two boxers, two swimmers, two weightlifters and 3 track and field athletes, plus a golfer, taekwondo competitor, judoka and table tennis player.

Five of the country’s 10 medals have come from boxing competition.
