It’s Olympics time once again, and once again the Philippines will seek to win its elusive first gold medal. The Philippines finally won its first medal in 20 years when weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz earned silver in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event at the Rio Olympics. Diaz’s medal was the country’s first since 1996, when Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco took silver in the light flyweight competition.

At the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 13 athletes comprised of two boxers, two swimmers, two weightlifters and 3 track and field athletes, plus a golfer, taekwondo competitor, judoka and table tennis player.

Five of the country’s 10 medals have come from boxing competition.

The athletes will receive plenty of motivation and support from their compatriots cheering them on in Brazil and at home, but can also find inspiration in the 10 medals won by the Philippines.
