LOOK: Hidilyn Diaz’s P5 million check for earning Olympic silver

MANILA, Philippines – Before Hidilyn Diaz’s plane touched down in Manila, her check for P5 million was already signed and ready.

Diaz, who earned silver at the 2016 Olympics in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event, earned a bonus amounting to $106,959 for ending the Philippines’ 20-year medal drought. The 25-year-old Diaz made good on her third trip to the Olympics, lifting a total of 200kg to earn a medal.

The check, issued by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Sports Developmental Fund, and signed by PSC chairman William “Butch” Ramirez, was issued for “Payment of cash incentives for winning the silver medal in 2016 Rio Olympics, Brazil.”

The Zamboanga City resident arrived Thursday afternoon, August 11 on Emirates Flight 332 with fellow Olympian Nestor Colonia and coach Alfonsito Aldanete and will proceed later to Davao for a courtesy call with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte at the presidential guesthouse in Panacan, Davao City. – Rappler.com
