Filipino fighter Vaughn Donayre to face Amir Khan in Singapore
Khan was supposed to face undefeated grappler Samir 'Flexible' Mrabet, but the latter is no longer competing due to an undisclosed injury

SINGAPORE – Filipino fighter Vaughn Donayre accepted a short-notice bout at ONE Championship’s “Defending Honor” event this Friday, November 11, as he is set to lock horns with Singaporean standout Amir Khan.

Khan was originally penciled in to face undefeated grappler Samir “Flexible” Mrabet, but the latter pulled out due to an undisclosed injury.

ONE Championship found a late replacement in Donayre, who has been a lightweight competitor under the Singapore-based mixed martial arts organization since 2014.

Donayre, who holds a win-loss slate of 8-5, started his prizefighting career in Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC), where he racked up an impressive 6-fight winning streak.

His victory roll in URCC served as his platform to be noticed by international promotions such as Hard Knox Fight Night, Global Fighting Championship, Dessert Force, and ONE Championship.

However, Donayre had mixed results in fighting on an international stage as he went 2-5 in his last 7 bouts.

Donayre is also coming off a unanimous decision loss to former ONE Championship featherweight titleholder Honorio Banario last April.

Getting his hand raised against Khan would mark Donayre’s first win in ONE Championship.

In the other corner, Khan (5-2) has won two-straight matches since yielding to Thai kickboxer Shannon Wiratchai via split decision in May 2015.

The 22-year-old Singaporean is no stranger to squaring off with a Filipino combatant as he owns a first-round submission triumph over Jimmy Yabo in November 2015.

“ONE: Defending Honor,” which takes place at the 12,000-seater Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore, is headlined by a lightweight championship clash between current titleholder Shinya Aoki and Filipino veteran Eduard Folayang. – Rappler.com
