MANILA, Philippines – Big man Ben Mbala of the De La Salle Green Archers is set to be named Most Valuable Player while teammate Aljun Melecio will claim the Rookie of the Year plum in the UAAP Season 79 men’s basketball awarding ceremony slated for Wednesday, December 7, right before Game 2 of the finals.

Mbala clinches the honor with 92.4286 statistical points and averages of 20.6 points, 16 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks in the elimination round.

Melecio, on the other hand, garnered 36.5714 statistical points as he edged out Adamson University’s Jerrick Ahanmisi. Melecio normed 8.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and one assist in the eliminations. (READ: ROY Melecio shows guts of steel in first UAAP finals game)

The Mythical selection is made up of DLSU’s Mbala and Jeron Teng with Far Eastern University’s Raymar Jose, University of the Philippines’ Paul Desiderio, and Ateneo de Manila University’s Thirdy Ravena.

In the women’s division, National University’s Afril Bernardino won her second straight MVP plum with her 91.8571 statistical points.

The women’s Mythical 5 consists of 3 NU players in Bernardino, Jack Danielle Animan, and Gemma Miranda, together with DLSU’s April Peñaranda, and University of the East’s Love Sto. Domingo.

Also to be recognized at Wednesday’s 2 pm ceremony are the UAAP athletes who participated in international competition this past year. 

That includes all those who competed at the ASEAN University Games in Singapore plus Rio Olympians Ian Lariba of DLSU who represented the country in table tennis, as well as Jessie Lacuna of Ateneo who competed in swimming. – Rappler.com
