MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao suffered one of the biggest losses of his life after he was knocked out by arch rival Juan Manuel Marquez in 6 rounds in front of a dominantly pro-Marquez crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, December 8 (Sunday Manila time) to punctuate what has been an epic rivalry between the two.
Marquez knocked Pacquiao out cold with a short right, giving Marquez his first ever victory over the Filipino.
This is Pacquiao's first loss by knockout since 1999.
Had Pacquiao survived all 12 rounds he may have won the fight. According to ESPN Stats Info, Pacquiao outlanded Marquez 94-51 in total punches and 68-41 in power punches in the first 6 rounds.
The fight had been intense throughout. In the 3rd round, Marquez dropped Pacquiao with a vicious right hook, the first time Marquez ever sent Pacquiao to the canvas. Pacquiao responded big, dropping Marquez on the 5th round, before he himself was knocked down yet again on the last seconds of the 6th.
It was the 4th bout between the two fighters who have always been each other's weakness.
Pacquiao and Marquez have gone to war 3 times with each instance ending in a close and controversial decision. They were so evenly matched that each round they have logged so far has been difficult to score.
Both Pacquiao and Marquez have said that this would be the last fight between them.
Marquez had significantly bulked up for his fight with Pacquiao and weighed in at a muscular 143 the day before the bout. Pacquiao meanwhile weighed in at 147, the weight limit for the fight.
Before the fight, Marquez, had arguably won more rounds over Pacquiao, although the Filipino has come out victorious by scoring knockdowns, a total of four in 36 rounds of competition. - Rappler.com
