MANILA, Philippines – The San Miguel Beermen started strong with a 118-93 drubbing of Blackwater Elite in the 2017 PBA Governors’ Cup, as they embark on the final leg of their quest for a Grand Slam this season.
Marcio Lassiter dropped 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting from deep with 5 assists on Saturday, July 29 at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City, as San Miguel made its debut 3 weeks after winning the Commissioner’s Cup title – the team’s second straight this season.
Import Wendell McKines also had 19 points with 12 rebounds and 5 assists, while June Mar Fajardo put up 18 markers and grabbed 8 boards.
Gabby Espinas and Arwind Santos contributed 16 and 12 points, respectively, off the bench as the Beermen quickly established a sizable 59-36 lead at halftime. San Miguel at one point led by as much as 38 points.
Blackwater didn’t quite have a real opportunity to contend when its import Trevis Simpson suffered a groin injury early in the game, leaving the Elite to go all-Filipino against a very talented foe.
Mike Digregorio wound up leading the still winless Blackwater (0-3) with 18 points and 4 rebounds. Poy Erram and Roi Sumang conspired for 28 points.
Meralco routs Rain or Shine
The Meralco Bolts rose to a 3-0 record after beating the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 89-73.
Allen Durham had another productive night of 23 points and 23 rebounds, complemented by 8 assists. Jared Dillinger had 16 markers on 4-of-8 3-pointers, while Chris Newsome went across the board again with 11 markers, 7 boards, and 5 dimes.
James Yap finally joined the 10,000-point club after missing out by 3 points last game when he scored 7 markers in a losing effort.
Yap recorded his 10,000th PBA point on a corner 3-pointer late in the third quarter.
JD Weatherspoon had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the now 1-2 Painters, while Maverick Ahanmisi added 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.
