PH women’s volleyball team sweeps Malaysia in SEA Games opener
The Philippines has already qualified for the semifinals due to Malaysia losing their opening match

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (UPDATED) – The Philippine national women’s volleyball team overwhelmed host Malaysia, 25-18, 25-11, 25-16, in the opener of their 2017 Southeast Asian Games on Thursday, August 24 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Center here. 

The Philippines capitalized on its height and superior talent to punish Malaysia from the attack line and the service deck. 

The Filipinos are set to go through to the semis after this first win with Malaysia already down 0-2 in the group phase. The home team dropped their opening match against Vietnam 25-17, 25-7, 25-11. 

Jaja Santiago utilized her height to dominate the net, pouring a team-high 13  points. Aby Maraño also asserted herself from everywhere on the court with 11 points including 3 blocks and two service aces. 

Jovelyn Gonzaga added 9 points while star Alyssa Valdez had 8 markers, including matchpoint.

Kim Fajardo had 5 service aces, including a number to set the tone early in a dominant second set. 

The Philippines next faces Vietnam in group B on Friday. – Rappler.com
