Tough luck for PH men’s and women’s football teams in SEA Games 2017
Both Philippine Football teams fail to register podium finishes in the 2017 edition of the Southeast Asian Games

MANILA, Philippines – Both Philippine men’s and women’s football teams finished without medals in the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games campaign on Thursday, August 24, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

After Thailand defeated the Philippines, 2-0, with a clean sheet on Tuesday, August 22, the nationals lost their chance of reaching the semifinals knockout round of the SEA Games men’s U-23 football tournament.

This led to a no-bearing match between the Philippines and Timor Leste – also eliminated in the tourney – as both teams held identical 1-win, 3-loss records.

Forturnately, the men’s squad beat Timor Leste, 2-0, to improve their record to 2-3-0.

Ateneo forward Jarvey Gayoso made his first SEA Games goal in the 13th minute. Timor Leste was then able to equalize before the stoppage time in the first half. In the second half, Gayoso once again scored the last goal of the match during injury time, which broke the deadlock, and surrendered the win to the Philippines.

The women’s side bowed to top seed Thailand, 3-1, in a do-or-die match for the right to play for the bronze medal. Powerhouse Thailand dominated the entire match, but Philippine defender Hali Long was able to score a clutch goal in the last minute of the stoppage time.  – Rappler.com
