MANILA, Philippines – Philippines took a podium finish in the 29th Southeast Asian Games men’s tennis doubles tournament on Friday, August 25 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Ruben Gonzales of Terre Haute, Indiana and Francis “Nino” Alcantara of Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines lost to Thailand in the finals, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7, and finished the tournament with a silver medal. Gonzales had earned silver in men’s doubles in the 2015 edition with Jeson Patrombon as his partner, while Alcantara earned a bronze in that same event teaming with Treat Huey.
“It hurts because we were playing well already in the second set but then we started really slow in the third set super tie break,” Alcantara tells Rappler. “But overall, still happy that we had a good fight but we are sorry that we couldn’t get the gold for the country.”
The Philippines had earlier earned a bronze in the women’s doubles from the duo of Denise Dy and Katharina Lehnert. – with reports from Ryan Songalia/Rappler.com
