
JAKARTA, Indonesia – The 2018 Asian Games took off with a grand welcome from host country Indonesia at the sprawling Gelora Bung Karno Stadium here on Saturday night, August 18.
Indonesia – which is hosting the quadriennial games for the first time in 36 years in Jakarta and Palembang – showcased its colorful culture in song and dance numbers that welcomed thousands of athletes from 45 Asian countries.
The Philippines sent a 272-strong delegation that was led by Filipino-American NBA player Jordan Clarkson, who served as flag-bearer.
Traditional favorite China, the overall champion in the 2014 edition, sent the biggest delegation with 845 athletes.
Fans from South Korea and North Korea were also ecstatic as both countries joined forces in the parade and will do the same in some sporting events. – Rappler.com
