JAKARTA, Indonesia – Meggie Ochoa emerged triumphant against compatriot Kaila Napolis, taking the honor of bringing home the Philippines’ sixth 2018 Asian Games bronze medal on Friday, August 24. 

The No. 1 seed bested Napolis, 2-0, in the jiu-jitsu women’s -49kg event. 

“Meron po akong mixed feelings kasi yung kalaban ko noong bronze-medal match is my teammate Kaila, and we’re very good friends and it doesn’t feel so good to beat your teammate, to be honest,” said Ochoa.

“But I’m happy that may bronze medal yung Philippines, although siyempre gusto ko gold yung ma-deliver, pero iba yung plano ng Diyos.”

(I have mixed feelings because my opponent in the bronze-medal match is my teammate Kaila, and we’re very good friends and it doesn’t feel so good to beat your teammate, to be honest. But I’m happy that the Philippines has another broze, although of course I wanted to deliver the gold but God has other plans.)

Ochoa got relegated to repechage after losing to Vietnam’s Thi Thanh Minh by advantage. She faced Bayarmaa Munkhgerel in the repechage final table to advance to the bronze medal match. 

Napolis, on the other hand, reached the semifinal but lost to Cambodia’s Jess Khan when she tapped out before the buzzer. – Rappler.com
