JAKARTA, Indonesia – Finally, a win in boxing.
Olympian Rogen Ladon asserted his mastery of less-known Chaudahry Prem of Nepal to win by unanimous decision, 5-0, in a preliminary flyweight bout as the Philippines checked its losing skid in the boxing competitions of the 2018 Asian Games on Sunday, August 26 at the Jakarta Expo Boxing Hall.
Ladon, also a veteran campaigner in the Asian circuit, did everything right form start to finish en route to the win that ended a four-bout setback for Team Philippines.
James Pelicte bowed to Uzbek foe Abdurasulov Shunkor, who eked out a 5-0 unanimous decision in their men’s lightweight bout, earlier on Sunday.
Palicte, who clinched a silver medal in the recent Thailand Open, fell prey to the more aggressive Shunkor, whose most notable accomplishment was a bronze medal finish in the 2016 World Youth Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia.
First to fall on Friday was welterweight Joel Bacho who lost, 3-2, to Poshtiri Sajad Kazemzadeh of Iran, followed by Nesthy Petecio in an extremely controversial 3-2 loss in a women’s featherweight fight with China’s Yin Jun Hua.
On Saturday night, the Philippines took its most stinging blow in the event when bantamweight Mario Fernandez was knocked out cold in the first round by Iraq’s Jaafar Abdulridha Ali Al Sudani. (READ: Fernandez suffers KO after controversial Petecio loss)
But late Sunday night, the Philippines again absorbed another setback as Irish Magno bowed to Asian Championships silver medalist Pang Chol Mi of Vietnam, 5-0, in women’s flyweight.
