MANILA, Philippines — Japeth Aguilar is now officially a member of GlobalPort.

A week after being traded to the Batang Pier, the six-foot-nine beanpole signed a one-year deal with the league’s newest team on Thursday, February 6, team manager BJ Manalo confirmed in a phone interview with Rappler.

Saying that he’s an integral part of the team’s present and future, GlobalPort offered Aguilar a three-year deal, but the 26-year-old opted for a one-year, P5.04-million contract that will keep him in the Batang Pier’s lair until the end of the 2013-14 Philippine Cup.

“As much as possible, we wanted (a) long-term (commitment),” said Manalo. “But we respect his decision.”

Privileged to have 2 reps in Gilas

Manalo also expressed elation that two of their players at GlobalPort were picked by Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes to join the national team pool.

“It’s a privilege na dalawa yung nakuha sa amin,” he shared. “That speaks a lot of our team.”

The youthful team manager also said that their team, after a busy offseason, is raring to go when the Commissioner’s Cup begins tomorrow, February 8.

“Ready to play na kami,” Manalo said. “We’re excited kase masusubukan agad kami against Petron.”
