MANILA, Philippines – Kiefer Ravena found out how heartbreaking it could be when something you love with passion gets taken away from you.
Suspended by FIBA for 18 months after testing positive for banned substances, Ravena cannot suit up for Gilas Pilipinas, the NLEX Road Warriors, or even attend any official basketball game.
But few months into his suspension, the basketball phenom found solace in golf.
“Golf is such a big part of me being also part of my recovery when I got suspended,” said Ravena in an interview with Rappler.
“It took most of the time of my day and it allowed me to calm myself down, focus and at the same time, be positive and see my surroundings how beautiful it is despite bad things happening or negative things happening.”
Just days before his 25th birthday on Saturday, October 27, the former Blue Eagle star organized his first ever golf tournament, the Phenom Cup, instead of hosting his usual charity basketball event.
The proceeds of the tourney last Wednesday went to Jerrick Balanza, who’s recovering from a brain tumor surgery, and the family of the late sports barker Rolly Manlapaz.
But aside from sparking good deeds, golf also fired up Ravena’s competitive spirt. Just watch the video and see how Ravena has become driven to do just as well in his newfound passion. – Rappler.com
