Finals rematch: Motivated FEU eyes upset vs La Salle
As FEU gears up for defending champion La Salle, the Lady Tamaraws hope to ride on a recent confidence booster

MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University (FEU) aims to finish its first-round campaign strong by vying for no less than an upset of defending champion La Salle in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

The Lady Tamaraws and the Lady Spikers clash in a rematch of last season’s Finals on Saturday, March 16, at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

I think sa darating na game namin ngayon sa La Salle, we’ll be more motivated and mas gugustuhin namin manalo since yun nga, na-straight two games nila kami last season,” said veteran middle blocker Celine Domingo.

(We’ll be more motivated this time since we got swept by La Salle in the Finals last season.)

Aside from vying to avenge their title-round sweep last year, the Lady Tamaraws also hope to ride on a recent confidence booster.

Last week, the Philippine volleyball team announced the list of players who made it to the training pool, and impressively, 7 are from the FEU roster.

Domingo, setter Gel Cayuna and open spiker Jerrili Malabanan have been tapped for the national seniors team, while rookie standout Lycha Ebon, Ria Duremdes, Jeanette Villarreal and Ivana Agudo have been selected for the under-23 juniors squad.

Siymepre, very proud ako kasi siyempre FEU yan, product ng FEU yan,” said FEU coach George Pascua. “Basta kailangan lang, yung pagiging national team kasi responsibilidad yan, kailangan alam lang nila i-manage.”

(Of course, I’m very proud because they are representing FEU. They just need to manage the responsibilities of being part of the national team.)

The players know they’ll eventually need to juggle their national team and school duties when preparation for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games starts, but for now, their focus remains on the UAAP campaign.

Siguro itong UAAP… dito kami mabi-build para sa kung ano ang madadala namin sa national team,” said Domingo. “Wala naman siya masyadong pressure, focused kasi kami sa UAAP.”

(I guess this UAAP will become an avenue for us to build on whatever we can bring to the national team. There’s no pressure in that since we’re focused on the UAAP.)

And they’re hoping that confidence will be enough for FEU to conquer La Salle in their first showdown this season. – Juro Morilla/
