NCAA: Letran, San Sebastian, CSB coast to easy wins

MANILA, Philippines – The Letran Knights, San Sebastian Golden Stags, and the College of St. Benilde (CSB) Blazers continued their winning ways in the NCAA Season 95.

Letran clamped down the JRU Heavy Bombers, 55-43, at the FilOil Flying V Center on Tuesday, July 16.

Graduating guard Bonbon Batiller broke free of his slump with 14 points, all coming in the 1st half, with 4 rebounds and 4 assists on 6/11 shooting. Ato Ular added 8 markers and 5 boards while rookie big man Pao Javillonar got 7 points and 2 boards in just 6 minutes on the floor.

After an ice-cold 1st half that saw JRU go down 17-30, the Bombers regrouped with an 8-0 run in the 3rd sparked by Ry Dela Rosa’s back-to-back triples. Although JRU got within 6 at that point, Javillonar went to work early in the 4th with three straight buckets to move Letran away by 12, 47-35.

Jerrick Balanza then stretched the lead to 15, 52-37, midway through the period, off a circus turnaround flip shot, which the Heavy Bombers never recovered from.

Dela Rosa was the lone JRU player in double-figures with a game-high 15 points on 5/7 shooting as his team fell to 0-2 for the season.

In the second game of the day’s triple-header, the San Sebastian Stags dominated the Mapua Cardinals, 92-68.

RK Ilagan caught fire anew in the lopsided win, topping with 20 points, 8 assists and 4 rebounds. Five other Stags breached double-digits in scoring, led by Allyn Bulanadi’s 16 markers and 5 boards.

The game was practically over by halftime as San Sebastian led 46-23. At that point, Ilagan and Bulanadi had outscored the entire Mapua team with a combined 25 markers.

Bulanadi then extended the lead to 32, 63-31, off a pair of free-throws midway through the 3rd. Mapua mustered a 10-1 run right after, but it was all for naught as the Stags eventually regained a 30-point lead in the 4th.

Noah Lugo led the Cardinals in their second-straight loss with 13 points. Laurenz Victoria added 11 markers while Warren Bonifacio added 10 points and 3 rebounds

Finally, the CSB Blazers stayed spotless in two games with a 69-57 win against the Perpetual Help Altas.

Carlo Young led the lengthy and chippy affair with 14 points while Kendrix Belgica added 12 markers on 5/6 shooting in just 15 minutes on the floor.

Young spearheaded CSB’s 2nd half resurgence with 3 of his 4 total threes coming in the 3rd quarter. All in all, the Blazers outscored the Altas in the 3rd, 23-8, to take a 49-41 lead.

Momentum slowed down to a halt in the 4th as both teams combined for 14 fouls resulting to 15 free-throws in the last 4 minutes. Although Perpetual got as close as 5 points, CSB mustered one last 9-1 run to take a decisive 71-58 lead in the last 1:58 of the game.

Jielo Razon and Kim Aurin led the Altas in the loss with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

The NCAA will hold its first On Tour game on Thursday, July 18, as EAC hosts the defending champions San Beda Red Lions.
