 MANILA, Philippines – After clinching a historic Asian Cup berth, the Philippines now vies for its first FIFA World Cup appearance. 

The Philippine Azkals are bunched with world No. 73 China, world No. 85 Syria, Maldives and Guam in Group A of the second round of the World Cup qualifiers.

Eight groups of 5 teams will play a home-and-away format of round-robin matches that will run from September 2019 until June 2020. 

The Philippines will open its campaign with a home game against Syria on September 5 at the Pana-ad Park and Stadium in Bacolod – where all the home matches will be hosted. 

The group winners and 4 best group runners-up will advance to the 3rd round of FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiiers, while gaining an automatic berth in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. 

The remaining 4 runners-up and 4 best 4th-placed teams across all groups will advance to the 3rd round of Asian Cup qualifiers.
