MANILA, Philippines — The win might have been by a hairline, but make no mistake: the National University Pep Squad are national champions for the first time.

NU won the 2013 National Cheerleading Championships in record fashion, collecting 331 points en route to its first major cheerleading title in school history at the Philsports Arena.

The Sampaloc cheer squad cleanly executed a difficult routine to get 61 points in Basic Elements, 68 points in Tumbling, 69 points in Stunts, 65 points in Tosses and 74 points in Pyramids to seal the trophy by just four points.

The CCP Bobcats were a close second after registering the highest scores in Basic Elements (63), Stunts (71) and Tosses (69) but the four-time champs could not overcome NU’s advantage in Tumbling (60) and Pyramids (68) to get their second bridesmaid finish.

NU and CCP were slapped six and four points penalties and deductions for errors and falls, respectively.

Four-peat NCAA champions University of Perpetual Help System Dalta wounded up third with a far 288.5 points, just a day after capturing another NCAA title at the Mall of Asia Arena.

UAAP runner-up Far Eastern University was fourth with 284.5 points while Tarlac State University completed the top five by amassing 232.5 points.

Rounding up the top 10 are Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (230.5), Colegio de San Juan de Letran (223), Arellano University (222), City University of Pasay (219.5) and Cavite State University (215).  – Rappler.com
