DepEd also promises to ensure 'clean and fair' games, from athlete screening to officiating of games.

MANILA, Philippines – An environment-friendly Palarong Pambansa will greet athletes, coaches and officials in May, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced Wednesday, March 14.

Food caterers will be required to not use plastic and styrofoam containers and utensils in preparation of meals, as part of measures that aim to minimize waste in the games, to be held in Lingayen, Pangasinan from May 6 to 12 this year.

“We started this (program) in Dipolog, Zamboanga (del Norte) last year, we will do it better this year,” said Education Secretary Br. Armin Luistro.

A memorandum of understanding between the DepEd and the provincial government of Pangasinan, the host province, was signed March 14.

Aside from this, the DepEd will ensure “clean and fair” athlete screening and games officiating.

Positive values

“The Palaro is a venue for values formation among our youth, this is where positive Filipino values should apply,” said Luistro.

Around 10,000 student-athletes, coaches, and officials from all 17 regions of the country will be present in the games.

Among those who played in the past for the Palarong Pambansa include Philippine Azkals Chieffy Caligdong and Christopher Camcam and ABS-CBN sports reporter Dianne Castillejo for tennis.

There are also plans to make the Palaro a “continuing activity” to develop young athletes, as well as to espouse sportsmanship among the youth. Luistro said the games is an important part of the basic education curriculum.

Sporting events for this year’s Palaro include athletics, arnis, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, football, gymnastics (women’s artistic gymnastics, men’s artistic gymnastic and rhythmic gymnastics), sipa takraw, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and volleyball, said the DepEd.

Additional sporting activities for the differently-abled include goalball, aquatics, bocce, long jump, shot put and 100, 200 and 400 meter dash.

The 2012 Palarong Pambansa will be having their own domain where real time updates will be made available for those who can’t be in Pangasinan during the duration of the event. Livestreaming via the Internet will also be available.

A total of P230-M is the budget for this event, which includes financial assistance for building or renovating schools in Pangasinan. – Rappler.com
