Led by Asian champion Monica Torres, the Philippines settles for bronze in the arduous run-bike-run relay in Subic

SUBIC, Philippines – The Philippines settled for a bronze as Thailand bagged the gold in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games duathlon mixed relay held Thursday, December 5.

Monica Torres, who won the indivial women’s duathlon race on Monday, powered the Filipino contingent but Thailand got off to a strong start before brushing off Singapore and the Philippines in the final stretch for a winning time of 1 hour, 28 minutes and 48 seconds.

Efraim Inigo, Pawie Fornea, and Emmanuel Comendador rounded out the 4 Filipino duathletes who each raced in the 2-kilometer run, 6.6-kilometer bike, and 1-kilometer run event.

Singapore, led by 17-year-old multisport prodigy Emma Middleditch, secured the silver with a 1:30:16 clocking, over a minute ahead of the Philippines’ 1:31:35 mark.

Thailand banked on the champion quartet of Pareeya Sonsem, Nattawut Srinate, Kuncharin, and Arthit Soda, while Singapore anchored its impressive showing on junior triathlon team members Middleditch, Ahmad Arif Ibrahim, Herlene Yu, and Nicholas Rachmadi.
