Beckham – who retired in 2013 when he was 38 years old – continues to build his brand in numerous sponsorships and is taking part in several global business ventures in sports, entertainment, fashion and food.
Recently, he is heading a sports management firm that will also handle his very own Major League Soccer (MLS) team Inter Miami CF, which will debut on Sunday, March 1 against another expansion team Los Angeles FC.
Just like any other busy adult hustling in this generation, Beckham also struggles to make time for his wife Victoria and 4 children Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper Seven.
But as a health and lifestyle ambassador of Philam Life, the football legend practices certain time management tips that he owns up to for a balanced life.
On sticking to a regimen
David: Well my daily routine, it can be [rigorous] because I have 4 children and anything can happen. I try to keep to a routine where I wake up in the morning, I wake the kids up, make them breakfast, I take them to school, I go to the office, I work out before I go to the office, go out for lunch then try to pick my children up.
Like I said, it doesn’t always happen. Because as parents, we try to do the right thing, take care of our kids, but obviously, there are a lot of people out there in the world that actually can’t take their children to school, or pick them up from school and that’s part of life. Everybody is different.
Juggling multiple business ventures while being a father of 4 is tough, but Beckham champions his roles with time management.
While it takes a lot of discipline to stick to a strict schedule, Beckham also admits that it cannot always be done due to unforeseen situations and various lifestyles of others.
The former England captain, instead, makes sure that both he and his equally busy wife are understanding towards each other and will try their best to make time for their family.
On getting enough sleep
David: I track my sleep as well. That’s an important part for me to try and stay fit while I do everything I try to do. I can drink coffee until 5 pm. I’m quite happy about that but obviously, I try to do the same at home. Victoria won’t let me sleep with the lights open.
Uh oh. If we were to follow Beckham’s healthy sleeping habits, we may have to lie low on coffee in the evenings.
If your work requires you to travel across different time zones like Beckham, he would recommend tracking your sleep. This will help you determine if you need an extra hour of sleep, which he claims would make a huge difference to get on with your day.
Thanks to Victoria, the three-time FIFA World Cup player gets to have a more restful sleep with the lights turned off. (READ: How to get a good night’s sleep)
On device management
David: I think the most important thing for me is the devices. When we’re dealing with the kids, it’s important to put those down even though you’re waiting to receive emails about work or things like that. That’s the difficult part with people who have these businesses or work. But it’s the important part of resting the mind and the body and preparing for yourself for a good night’s sleep.
Even when duties from work go beyond his usual hours, Beckham sets a strict curfew for himself to put his devices down in order to spend time with his children and set a good example to them.
In his routine, Beckham puts down his phone after dinner then waits an hour to spend time with his family as the notification for work goes away.
On building a good support system
David: I’m very lucky that every since I retired and even when I was playing, I have had amazing partners and supporters. And once I finished playing, it was great because it enabled me to go into different markets and spend more time going around getting to know my partners and have amazing people around. So that’s one of the things that actually I really enjoy – being able to do something like that where I am part of a company that changes people’s lives. It makes me proud to be something that is part of a movement.
By building and growing his storied football career, Beckham was able transition from being a high-profile athlete to a successful businessman as he took care of the partnerships he has forged in the past.
After inspiring young kids and football fans, Beckham also wanted to continue giving back to the community through his passion in business.
This also motivates him to continue working to be fit and healthy as it becomes rewarding for him to be able to fulfill his responsibilities and devote energy to becoming a good father at home. – Rappler.com
