DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — More than just sports and competition.

The Department of Education reached out to the community by holding a Gawad Kalinga Bayanihan Build in Mabinay town two days before the 2013 Palarong Pambansa officially unfurls here.

With the Bulwang Elementary School as its recipient, Chief Physical Education and Sports Supervisors of all 17 regions in the country participated in the special event for the Mabinay community in Negros Oriental.

“This event was held to show that more than sports, athletes can participate in nation-building,” said Adolf Aguilar, general event coordinator of the Palaro. “Kahit athlete ka, pwede kang makatulong sa nation-building.”

Mabinay Mayor Jango Uy delivered the welcome remarks as the PES supervisors and their assistants spent the day painting and landscaping classrooms put up by the Gawad Kalinga in the school. – Rappler.com
