DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines—For peace and progress.

As the biggest sporting affair in the country kicked off Sunday, April 21, Department of Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro sees the Palarong Pambansa 2013 as an instrument to promote amity and progress through the week-long display of athletic prowess and camaraderie.

With the theme “Sports: Road to Peace and Progress,” Luistro reiterated that this year’s staging of the Palaro will be key to nation-building, especially in the war-torn parts of the country in the south.

Aside from promoting peace, DepEd, together with the provincial government of Negros Oriental, also took an extra step to make the event cleaner and greener with tree-planting projects, outreach programs, and other eco-friendly practices throughout the duration of the Games.

“The Palarong Pambansa can help in nation-building,” said Luistro. “We should not just focus on our respective competitions, but also on working hand in hand with the government to take care of our environment and contribute to peace.”

The organizing committee has put to place all the game venues such as the Gov. Mariano Perdices Memorial Stadium and the Lamberto L. Macias Sports and Cultural Center, and the billeting areas even before the student-athletes started to flock in this university city.

They also boast the fact that all the location of Palaro-related activities will be found within a 10-kilometer radius.

The Games, with the partnership of private entities, have also announced that winning athletes will be receiving cash incentives from the Palarong Pambansa itself, a first for the biggest grassroots program in the country.

“We were able to draw a lot of sponsorship packages this year. I assure everyone that the donations we received shall be given to the winners,” said the DepEd secretary. – Rappler.com
