MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) and Rappler have agreed to partner together in generating interest for Palarong Pambansa 2012.
As DepEd’s official media partner, Rappler will use social media to build up interest in the nationwide sports event that gathers top high school and elementary school athletes to compete in the annual competition.
DepEd Assistant Secretary Toni Umali welcomed the department’s partnership with Rappler, and what Rappler-led Twitter and Facebook conversations can do to increase interactions and interest.
He shared that in the past, much attention was given to the games, but it has increasingly dwindled over the years, a trend he wants to reverse, starting with this summer’s Palaro.
Rappler managing editor Glenda M. Gloria said that given the power of social media, Rappler’s readers here and abroad will surely get to know more about Palaro.
DepEd Communications Unit Director Tina Ganzon talked about the agency’s goals for this year’s game aside from it being the first ‘clean and green‘ event.
“We really want to instill, among the athletes, a spirit of sportsmanship. We believe people excel in sports,” said Ganzon. “We want the kids to be aware of this annual sporting event and to be excited. This is something already part of the tradition of students. There’s a lot to look forward to.”
The games will take place in Lingayen, Pangasinan from May 6-12. – Rappler.com
