TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines — Playing in front of her kababayans, Charo Soriano delivered the goods for Tuguegarao as they annexed another easy win over Nova Bolei, 25-17, 25-15, 25-10 Thursday, June 27, to formally enter the final phase of the Gov. Alvaro Antonio Friendship Games at the People’s Gymnasium here.
The former Ateneo stalwart starred in the first and 3rd sets as Tuguegarao repeated a sweep of the Urdaneta-based side to secure a ticket to the 3-team round robin finals.
But unlike in their win the other day, Nova Bolei fought with pride this time as they went neck-and-neck with the star-studded squad.
Nova Bolei put on a good fight in the early goings as they endured Tuguegarao’s hard-nosed starting lineup of Fille Cainglet, Jem Ferrer, Sue Roces, Gretchel Soltones, and Charo and Pau Soriano to lead the favorites 8-7.
Tuguegarao, however, proved to be too classy for them as both Soriano’s waxed hot to leave their opposition eating the dust, 25-17.
Different group, same result
Tuguegarao coach Roger Gorayeb fielded in a different group in the second set, as Dindin Santiago, Rubie de Leon, Angela Benting, Jang Bualee and Utaiwan Kaensing starred, but it was pretty much the same story as Nova Bolei again started well only to squander their chances midway through the set.
The Thai connection of Bualee and Utaiwan worked well for Tuguegarao in the set as they rained the Nova Bolei side with vicious attacks to claim a 2-0 advantage, 25-10.
Charo Soriano then finished off Nova Bolei’s campaign in this tournament as she put the pressure early on as Tuguegarao erected a 10-point lead, 18-8.
The squad from Urdaneta seemed to lose their composure late in the set as they committed error after error to give the set to Tuguegarao on a silver platter, 25-10. – Rappler.com
