UST came from behind to beat Adamson, 67-62

STAR PLAYER. Adamson's Harry Petillos tries to prevent UST's Jeric Teng from scoring a basket.

MANILA, Philippines — University of Santo Tomas roared from an early hole to nip Adamson University, 67-62, to tie for the lead in the 76th UAAP men’s basketball tournament Saturday, July 6, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

With the Soaring Falcons zooming to a great start, the Growling Tigers outscored their foes, 19-7, in the 3rd period as Kevin Ferrer and Jeric Teng waxed hot.

After building a 63-53 lead with 1:22 remaining, UST saw its lead dwindle to two after Adamson fired 3 straight triples as Teng missed 3 of 4 free-throws.

Teng, who finished with 15 points and 6 rebounds, then struck the dagger with a jumper with 14 seconds left to give the Tigers a 65-62 cushion, one that proved just enough to turn back the pesky Falcons.

Ferrer led all scorers with 17 markers, 4 rebounds but UST had to survive a 52-rebound night for the hardworking Adamson crew.

“Our first half was a disappointment,” said coach Pido Jarencio. “We adjusted in the second half and negated Sewa’s advantage.”

Falcon guard Jericho Cruz registered 15 points but missed all 5 of his 3-point attempts. The wingman, though, grabbed 8 boards and issued 8 assists while Ingrid Sewa and Rodney Brondial combined for 22 points and 24 rebounds. – Rappler.com
